This is the case because, most often, the individual spearheading the activity rarely thinks through the point of the activity, including how it fits into the learning course.

This instills fear among the new students.

In short, starting a meaningful student activity is not an attractive setup for meaningful activity.

Chances are, if you, as a teacher, is bored with the activity, then the students are bored twice more. Moving around a class discussing what you had for dinner or when you slept last night is boring.

A bad icebreaker warns that the course will be boring, unimportant, and irrelevant.

This doesn’t mean the icebreaker is unimportant. It is more boring and unconvincing to spend the entire first day of class going through the syllabus.

You may dismiss students early for no meaningful connection to a course as a teacher. Starting a course on such a note is dangerous.

Therefore, looking for quality icebreakers that match many of the boxes that every teacher and learner hopes to accomplish during the first day in class remains relevant. In short, craft a meaningful speed dating activity for students.

The Speed Dating Ice-Breaker

I rank speed dating activity for students highly. It is the most interactive activity, allowing students and the teacher to have much fun.

When doing this activity in class:-

  • Get the learners to trust you, despite not knowing you
  • Maintain the fast pace
  • Touch on things that students genuinely show interest
  • Assure the students that they are essential to the class. They are interesting, and each has something to contribute to the course.

  • Get the students into pairs, and let them stand across each other in two lines. This depends on the number.
  • Give every student a piece of paper with a question on it
  • Divide them into two equal groups
  • Choose one line of learners to ask the questions first
  • Also, have a set of students moving between the questions. The learners ask their partner the question

An Example

“If you would choose a life partner anywhere in the world, where would they be from? The partner has 30 seconds to answer. After the time elapses, the teacher says, “switch.”

The other partner has a chance to ask the questions. After 30 seconds, you ask them o “rotate.”

At this point, the one-student line steps down to the next student

The student at the very end of the line rotates to the starting line.  

The steps repeat themselves until all the students have engaged with one another.

Class-Wide Conversations

After the activity, you must have a class-wide conversation (broken into small groups initially) on what the students learned.

Here you write down varied questions such as: –

  • Did anybody get a pretty exciting and unique answer to the question asked?
  • What was the weirdest answer you received?
Remember, No mention of names.

After that, as a teacher, start a conversation on the type of skills the learners displayed during the activity.

Also, talk about the significance of the skills in the course in progress and the learning process in general.

Encourage the students to follow up with others, especially those they found their answers interesting.

Lighting Round

Ensure the students feel you are part of the conversation. So, allow them to ask you random questions as well.

They could stick to the same questions they asked each other or formulate their own to make the game more interesting. It is more fun and allows the learners to know you better.

The questions to use

When selecting questions, consider the following: –

  • Be as creative as possible
  • Consider the diversity of your students
  • Avoid questions that could lead to racial issues
  • Avoid questions that body shame the learners
  • Avoid questions that lean toward your worldview assumptions
  • If possible, have the students create and submit their questions for the speed-dating icebreaker.

  • What is your favorite food?
  • Are you a morning or night person?
  • Name three hobbies you love the most.
  • What do you think, if given a chance, you would change in the world today?
  • Technology and talent, which one do you prefer?
  • What do you love about your town?
  • Politics and entertainment, which one do you prefer?
  • What was the most embarrassing thing you have ever experienced?
  • Which town were you born in?
  • What animated character describes your personality?
  • If you were to visit a country, which one could it be?
  • What do you hate the most?
  • You are in a club partying, and someone slaps; how do you react?

Do the following when setting up the space for the SPEED DATING ACTIVITY FOR STUD.ENTS

  1. Arrange chairs in two lines to allow the students to sit and face each other
  2. When you have more time, set up chairs in between to make the icebreaker game exciting and realistic.
  3. If your students know each other and their target language, allow them to use their identities.
  4. If they don’t know each other, invent a person to play
  5. When inventing characters, let them note this on a piece of paper
  6. Name
  7. Age
  8. Job
  9. Hobby
  10. Country of origin
  11. Personality types
  12. Likes and dislikes

The Process

Allow the students to keep their cards.

However, I advise t you to put the cards in one basin, then draw a random person.

  • Let the students introduce themselves to the opposite person as they interact for about two minutes. This kills the fear and tension, allowing them to interact freely.
  • After the time elapses, the students from one line can move one space to their left. Then start a conversation with their new partners.
  • Repeat as many times as possible until the students come back to their original partner
  • After the activity, allow the students to form small groups based on the people they met and discuss what they found out.
  • For example
  • “I met Richard from Ghana. He loves tech and swimming.

In case the learners invented people, let them provide their personality impressions. Observe the adjectives they use and match them with what was written on the card

Allow them to mention who was the best match as a friend, using their hobbies, personality, likes, and dislikes.

The speed dating activity for students could also be turned into a written activity. They could write a message to a friend describing the speed dating activity.

It is a good idea if the target language is a reported speech.

Target Language

Speed Dating activity is fun and allows students to know each other. It acts as the first icebreaker for a new class and course.

First, determine the course, sports engineering or nursing, and let the students create questions about the courses. However, do not avoid the general questions as well.

For instance, when teaching ESL, allow the learners to invent the personality adjectives that describe people. They include talkative, introverted, shy, loud, etc.

This allows them to understand the vocabulary better by identifying many personalities.
